Dr. Dobson is originally from England. In 1979 he received a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Lancaster, in England. He then came over to the U.S. to pursue graduate work at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a masters degree in economics in 1981, and a Ph.D. in finance in 1988.

Since completing his Ph.D., Dr. Dobson has become increasingly interested in business ethics, and in particular how the theory of ethics relates to financial side of business activity. He has published articles on ethics and finance in various academic journals, and has published two books, both of which investigate the synthesis of business and ethics. His current research focusses on the extent to which business activity can be viewed less as a technical enterprise, and more as an artistic pursuit.
